Assistant Operations Director:

 Oversees daily operations and ensures that the business is well-coordinated and productive by managing procedures and employees for multiple sites.  Participate in contractual negotiations, maintain accurate inventories, implement cost control measures and track progress. 

 Area oversight of day-to-day execution, safety, quality control and process-setting for all operational activities.

 

Responsibilites: 

  • Execute strategic initiatives that ensure the efficient and safe processing, handling, transporting and loading of material in accordance with the wider sub regional and country operational objectives
  • Together with the Regional Commercial and Transport Teams establish and execute regional operational plans that effeciently meet the business requirements.
  • Work with the country transport team in order to ensure the safe, compliant, efficient and cost effective domestic transportation of material in line with company requirements and standards.
  • Manage the plant and facility costs for area and contribute towards the regional cost management strategy and identify initiatives that align with company requirements and deliver bottom line benefits to the business 
  • Identify and motivate capital expenditure that address operational constraints, safety or environmental shortcomings or end of life asset replacement for the area
  • Work with Regional Operations Director to develop plans to integrate new acquisitions into Sims SHECS, operations and information technology systems for area operations.
  • Set and report on objectives and targets for yards throughout the area ensuring outputs are in accordance with regional expectations relating to safety, volumes, efficiency, yields, quality, labor and employee relations, and sustainability
  • Work with regional and local transportation teams to manage stevedoring, freight and load port logistics to support the completion of country operational plans relating to bulk cargo and domestic sales commitments
  • Effectively manage and utilise asset base, including routine, preventative & predictive maintenance and replacement programs  
  • Ensure the implementation of established effective risk management strategies delivering transparency, disclosure and open communication, in accordance with company standards 
  • Effectively develop and promote a service excellence orientation across the designated area
  • Oversee stock and inventory integrity through the implementation of programs that direct the completion of regular audits and reporting in line with company requirements, including reviews and approvals for assessing inventory based on net realisable value and write offs/ons in conjunction with the regional commercial team
  • Assist in the recruitment and development of the area Operations teams including maintenance, stevedoring, and production
  • Advise yard supervisors on labor issues including safety, security, employee and labor relations, training.
  • Demonstrate personal responsibility for, and lead and promote a culture of proactive compliance with, all Safety, Health, Environment, Community, and Sustainability (SHECS) policies, procedures, and initiatives within sub-region or regional function with multiple teams
  • Promote culture of diversity and inclusion, positive employee relations, and teamwork, and ensure standards of fairness and equality are maintained within sub-region or regional function with multiple teams
  • Set and approve budgets (including capex) and manage costs by implementing a system of control and approvals in line with Company strategy, budgetary requirements, and financial policies and procedures for sub-region or regional function with multiple teams
  • Work with Country Non-Trade Procurement teams to define select fixed plant and contractual services and provide approval for purchase requisitions at the appropriate spend level as defined by global and regional policies
  • Support, recommend, and implement continuous improvement initiatives and foster compliance with quality requirements in accordance with a regional or global functional strategy 
  • Support and ensure compliance with all Company policies, procedures, and initiatives within sub-region or regional function with multiple teams
  • Devise workforce strategies to build capabilities, instil high performance, and promote career-development in line with succession-planning initiatives for sub-region or regional function with multiple teams.

 

Experience:

  •   Degree in Business, Operations, Engineering or related field  preferred
  • ~5 years of experience, preferably in materials recycling, manufacturing, mining, energy or industrial consulting
  • 2+ years leadership experience in an operational role
  • Operations/ Supply Chain background, preferably in an industrial goods, mining or energy company
  • Knowledge of Metals Industry
