You will be responsible for advancing a culture of environmental stewardship by providing guidance and support to comply with both internal and external environmental regulatory requirements at the local, state, province and federal levels ensuring conformance to company environmental standards.  You will also facilitate the implementation of preferred environmental practices to protect Sims Limited’s ability to operate and enhance our environmental position in the communities in which we operate.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop regional strategic plan within the EHS Management System for environmental-related Standards, delivery systems, training, tools and communication, ensuring alignment with broader environmental strategies and objectives
  • Drive implementation, monitoring of Environmental strategic plans considering local standards aligned with regulatory requirements includingdischarge, waste water and emissions.
  • Develop, monitor and adjust regional environmental key performance indicators designed to measure continual progress with environmental goals, in line with global requirements.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to regional business leadership to enhance environmental performance
  • Promote and facilitate company related environmental standard conformance, regulatory and legal compliance, external and internal standard conformance requirements within designated region.
  • Provide guidance and support to regional EHS team to track, manage, and report compliance activities and results to environmental company expectations.
  • Support external/internal environmental audits of facilities and interface with key external audit entities on compliance activities; Supports Sims Internal Audit department to support environmental components for annual audit requirements.  
  • Support remediation projects and activities to ensure remediation efforts are managed with best practices to achieve optimum outcomes.  
  • Collaborate with operational management teams as subject matter experts to provide guidance and support for environmental aspects of the business.
  • Participate in the Sims Environmental Committee to develop company standard requirements, standardized controls, support the development of applicable key performance indicator and guidelines, environmental training (awareness and leadership), develop inspection programs for operations and EHS personnel, monitor project development and implementation.
  • Represent environmental conformance/compliance and improvement strategies during Regional and Divisions executive team meetings, as needed   
  • Direct daily activities and focus areas for Environmental Specialists driving on-site conformance and improvements.
  • Monitor environmental regulations and industry standards to provide business units with direction to meet compliance requirements.
  • Act as the escalation point of contact for operations to coordinate environmental regulatory inquiries and mitigation actions.
  • Support the upskilling, coaching/mentoring of operations management on environmental requirements.
  • Engage with stakeholders within the community to address proactive environmental initatives and/or concerns raised with buisness activities.
  • Affiliate with environmental associations to keep informed of environmental technologies and innovations for potential company application.
  • Liase with governmental stakeholders to drive environmental activities within local regulations.
  • Demonstrate personal responsibility for, and ensure compliance with, all EHS policies, procedures, and initiatives within team.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in earth sciences (or below) or related field experience such as; ecology; geology; chemical or environmental engineering; environmental health; environmental sciences or management; engineering - with a sustainability focus.
  • Min. of 10 years’ experience in environmental management, having site, regional and global experience for environmental compliance requirements, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience implementing workplace environmental regulations and standards and working with authorities involved in workplace EHS oversight
  • May include technical and/or professional certifications
  • Experience in metal or electronics recycling, or related industry, preferred
  • Environmental 14001 ISO standard management experience preferred

 

Key Skills/Competencies

  • Advanced computer database and Microsoft Office software skills
  • Strong understanding of regulations affecting manufacturing companies
  • Strong customer focused communications and presentation skills
  • Strong customer service skills including ability to build and maintain excellent working relationships with internal and external stakeholders
