Position Summary

The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all maintenance activities for the facility's mobile equipment, processing equipment, and infrastructure to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations. This position supervises maintenance technicians and contractors, manages preventive and corrective maintenance programs, and ensures compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements. The Maintenance Supervisor plays a critical role in minimizing downtime, improving equipment reliability, and supporting production goals in a fast-paced metals recycling environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Safety Leadership

  • Promote and enforce a culture of safety throughout all maintenance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with company safety policies, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, hot work, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and job hazard assessments.
  • Investigate equipment-related incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Maintenance Operations

  • Supervise, coach, and develop maintenance technicians, welders, and other maintenance staff.
  • Plan, prioritize, assign, and monitor daily maintenance work.
  • Coordinate emergency repairs to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Oversee troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of processing equipment including:
  • Shears
  • Balers
  • Conveyors
  • Magnets
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Material handling systems
  • Supervise maintenance of mobile equipment including:
  • Excavators
  • Material handlers
  • Wheel loaders
  • Forklifts
  • Cranes
  • Trucks and trailers

Preventive Maintenance

  • Develop and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Ensure maintenance schedules are completed on time and documented accurately.
  • Analyze equipment failures and implement reliability improvements.
  • Utilize maintenance management software (CMMS) to track work orders, maintenance history, and equipment performance.

Planning and Asset Management

  • Monitor equipment condition and recommend repairs, rebuilds, or replacement strategies.
  • Maintain inventory of critical spare parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Coordinate purchasing of maintenance materials and services.
  • Assist in developing maintenance budgets and controlling maintenance costs.
  • Track key performance indicators (KPIs) such as equipment uptime, maintenance costs, work order completion, and preventive maintenance compliance.

Environmental and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
  • Support spill prevention, stormwater compliance, and waste management requirements.
  • Maintain required maintenance records and inspection documentation.

Leadership and Workforce Development

  • Provide training, mentoring, and performance feedback to maintenance team members.
  • Assist in recruiting, onboarding, and evaluating maintenance personnel.
  • Promote teamwork and effective communication between maintenance and operations departments.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels to support operational requirements.

Other Duties

  • May travel to regional recycling facilities as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical certification, vocational training, or associate degree in industrial maintenance, mechanical technology, electrical technology, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of industrial maintenance experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or lead maintenance experience.
  • Experience in metals recycling, scrap processing, aggregates, mining, steel manufacturing, heavy industrial operations, or similar industries preferred.
  • Experience with heavy mobile equipment and hydraulic systems strongly preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication techniques.
  • Understanding of industrial maintenance best practices and reliability principles.
  • Familiarity with CMMS systems and maintenance planning processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, schematics, and drawings.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a demanding production environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in outdoor industrial environments exposed to varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk, climb ladders, bend, kneel, crawl, and work at heights.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to work around moving equipment, elevated work areas, noise, dust, and vibration.
  • Ability to respond to emergency maintenance situations outside of normal working hours when necessary.

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced metals recycling and processing environment.
  • Exposure to heavy equipment, moving machinery, dust, noise, and weather conditions.
  • Regular interaction with operations personnel, contractors, and vendors.
  • May require overtime, weekend work, and on-call availability to support plant operations.
