II) Job Summary
The Shear Operator is responsible for setting up and operating a hydraulic shear machine, selecting the appropriate materials for each job, and performing precise cuts to meet required quantities and dimensions. May mark identification on materials/workpieces before processing. Performs other duties as assigned.
Major Job Responsibilities / Duties

Operate power shear to cut metal objects such as sheets, plates, billets, or bars to specified lengths.

Lift workpieces manually or by hoist/crane to machine bed or roller table.

Position workpieces against side guides, end stops, or layout lines under the shear blade.

Start machine to clamp workpiece and lower blade to cut metal accurately.

Adjust stops according to calibrated gauges to shear materials to correct lengths (e.g., scrap, billets, reinforcing rods).

Perform routine machine setup and maintenance as needed.

Ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.

Contributes to production efficiency and accuracy in the yard.

Supports overall business unit operations by ensuring materials are processed correctly and on time.

Impacts operational workflow and downstream production quality.
Job Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required.
B. Job-Related Experience
-
1–3 years of experience in a related mechanical or manufacturing role.
C. Other Required Skills / Certifications / Physical Demands
-
Basic math and computer skills required.

Knowledge of machining procedures.

Forklift and overhead crane experience preferred.

Ability to set up machines to specifications.

Strong safety awareness and adherence to safety protocols.

Ability to lift and move materials as required.
