Overall Job Summary: The Regional Transportation Manager is responsible for managing all transportation operations and personnel across multiple sub-regions. This role ensures the efficient, safe, compliant, and cost-effective transportation of materials (including ferrous and non-ferrous) to meet customer expectations, business needs, and align with the broader strategic goals of the Director of Transportation and company requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee transportation operations and personnel across 3 regions, including multiple yard sites and feeder yards.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient transportation of materials in compliance with company standards and regulations.
  • Lead and manage the safety and DOT compliance of the transportation team, ensuring timely completion of training through Sims University.
  • Collaborate with Transportation Managers and Supervisors to:
    • Conduct weekly driver meetings and one-on-one sessions as needed.
    • Review and address driver safety performance through Lytx videos and alerts.
    • Register new assets with the DMV and manage associated tax filings.
    • Address and resolve incidents (e.g., equipment breakdowns, accidents, etc.).
    • Manage capital expenditures, asset replacement, and work with commercial/operations teams to meet business demands.
    • Ensure compliance with regulations (My COI, MSA, DQ files, DVIR logs, registrations, permitting, IFTA, IRP, MCS 150 filings).
    • Manage transportation trade issues, hauler payments, freight rates, and fuel surcharges.
    • Implement competitive bidding processes for engaging new contractors and establishing appropriate contracts.
    • Order supplies, equipment, repairs, and inspections for the transportation department.
    • Oversee dispatchers, transportation coordinators, fleet maintenance, and emergency repairs.
    • Ensure annual federal inspections for all assets and manage both union and non-union drivers.
    • Monitor freight movement, review slow-moving bins, and provide recommendations for improvement.
    • Ensure compliance with EHS standards (CCVs, OBAs, self-inspections, and corrective actions).
    • Arrange permitted loads or outsource oversize loads to meet business requirements
    • Collaborate with business partners on budgeting, spending, and forecasting large expenses.
    • Manage contractor performance to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
    • Maintain and improve customer service levels for internal and external customers.
    • Work closely with operations managers, yard managers, and commercial managers to ensure timely, safe, and efficient loadouts.
    • Provide market intelligence and industry knowledge to the operations or commercial teams as needed.
    • Promote diversity, inclusion, teamwork, and fair treatment within the transportation team.
    • Develop training and succession plans for direct reports.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives and foster compliance with quality requirements.
    • Ensure team adherence to company policies, procedures, and initiatives. 

 

              Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Operations, Logistics, or a related field preferred.
  • 10-15 years of experience in logistics or transportation, preferably in an industrial goods or recycling industry.
  • 5+ years of leadership experience in an operational role.
  • Background in logistics with experience in the metal industry highly preferred.

 

 This role is essential in driving operational efficiency, safety, and compliance, while ensuring customer satisfaction and contributing to the company's overall success.
