Purpose of the Role:

The Non-Ferrous Yard Manager is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the non-ferrous metals yard, including material handling, inventory control, processing, and personnel management. This role ensures safe, efficient, and compliant handling of non-ferrous scrap and products (e.g., copper, aluminum, brass, stainless steel) while maximizing operational productivity and quality

 

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Manage all yard operations related to receiving, grading, sorting, processing, and shipping of non-ferrous metals.
  • Supervise and lead a team of equipment operators, laborers, and scale personnel; provide training and performance feedback.
  • Ensure accurate material classification and grading based on REMA specifications and customer requirements.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy through proper tagging, weighing, and documentation of materials.
  • Monitor equipment condition and coordinate maintenance schedules to ensure uptime and safety.
  • Enforce compliance with company policies, environmental regulations, and OSHA safety standards.
  • Collaborate with sales and purchasing teams to ensure timely order fulfillment and material flow.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Ensure yard cleanliness, organization, and operational readiness.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for yard-related issues.
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Key Performance Indicator (KPIs):

  • Maintain inventory turn of 1.5 or higher

 

Experience/Qualifications Required:

  • High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or technical degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in metals recycling, scrap yard, or materials handling operations.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience, preferably in a a high paced non-ferrous operation.
  • The Yard Manager must be able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment. Must be proficient in MS Office and be comfortable on a computer. Must be able to work well with others and be able to manage a group of up to 25-30 people.

Skills:

  • Strong understanding of non-ferrous metals, their properties, and common grades.
  • Experience operating and managing equipment such as forklifts, loaders, shears, and balers.
  • Working knowledge of inventory systems, basic logistics, and yard flow.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and in varying weather conditions.
  • Familiarity with safety protocols and regulatory compliance (e.g., OSHA, EPA).

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor/yard environment with exposure to noise, dust, and heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs, climb, bend, and work in physically demanding conditions.
  • Occasional weekend or extended hours may be required depending on business needs.
