Purpose of Role:

Serves as a gatekeeper to ensure inbound material meets company specifications and requirements. Directs customers and yard employees with respect to material flow, sorting, and upgrading. Makes certain that railcar processing is completed as required by organization and suppliers.

Principal Accountabilities: 

  • Inspects inbound material for grading. Issues inspection tickets annotating appropriate deductions and documents them, if needed.
  • Ensures inbound railcars are identified, reported and processed as required.
  • Identifiy and inspect railcar components for recovery and inventories.
  • Oversees and prepares rail parts for shipping
  • Maintains and records accurate railparts inventories.
  • Provides administrative support as part of the railcar processing business.
  • Communicates with railcar suppliers and customers as directed by the Commercial Director, Railcar Dismantling.  
  • Inspects inbound material for non-conforming material to determine appropriate actions, if the material is found.
  • Communicates with sales force problematic loads and acts as a liaison between Yard Manager and sales representative to determine appropriate actions; including, but not limited to, taking pictures of material and e-mailing them to the appropriate representative.
  • Directs yard personnel (Crane Operators, Loader Operators, SkidSteer operators, Metal Sorters, Laborers) regarding the sorting and upgrading of material piles.
  • Inspects outbound material for quality and sizing utilizing a knowledge base of customer requirements and processing procedures.
  • Directs truck flow in the yard to ensure safe and efficient movement. Communicates with transportation and EHS about unsafe acts.
  • Assists Yard Supervisors and Plant managers in determining workflow in the yard and optimum placement of materials utilizing processing procedures.
  • (Participates in regular visits to end-user facilities (steel mills) to learn customer requirements and material acceptance programs.)

Experience Required:

  • Two years of supervisory experience preferred 
  • In-depth knowledge of railcar components and material types and hazards, preferred
  • Forklift and heavy equipment operation experience, preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and respond quickly to changing conditions.
  • Fluent in Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to navigate challenging situations diplomatically.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily outdoor/yard environment with exposure to noise, dust, and heavy equipment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs, climb, bend, and work in physically demanding conditions.
  • Occasional weekend or extended hours may be required depending on business needs.
