Schedule: 8am - 4:30pm M-F and some Saturdays as needed

Job Summary

The Material Flow Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the safe and efficient movement, inspection, inventory, packaging, and shipment of railcar and recycled metal components throughout the facility. This position operates material handling equipment, including forklifts, skid loaders, manlifts, and water trucks, to support the Supervisor in maintaining inventory accuracy, preparing customer orders, and ensuring materials are processed and shipped according to company standards. The Material Flow Coordinator plays a critical role in supporting production flow, operational efficiency, and workplace safety.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Safely operate forklifts, skid loaders, manlifts, water trucks, and other material handling equipment.
  • Adhere to all SMM safety policies, procedures, and environmental standards.
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Conduct equipment inspections prior to operation and report deficiencies immediately.
  • Assist the Supervisor with receiving, inspecting, identifying, and inventorying railcar and recycled metal components.
  • Coordinate the movement of materials throughout the yard and warehouse to support operational needs.
  • Manually palletize parts and package materials according to specification sheets and customer requirements.
  • Load wheel sets, palletized materials, and other products onto trailers for shipment.
  • Complete pre-operational equipment inspections and maintain required inspection records.
  • Verify inventory counts and assist with material tracking and inventory control.
  • Ensure proper storage, organization, and identification of materials within designated areas.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas through routine housekeeping activities.
  • Identify and report damaged materials, equipment issues, inventory discrepancies, and safety concerns.
  • Support loading, unloading, shipping, and receiving activities as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors, drivers, customers, and team members to ensure efficient material flow.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions, procedures, correspondence, and work orders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced industrial environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience operating forklifts, skid loaders, manlifts, or other heavy equipment.
  • Experience in metals recycling, manufacturing, railroad, logistics, warehousing, or industrial operations.
  • Forklift certification or ability to become certified through company training.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 pounds.
  • Ability to safely enter and exit equipment multiple times per shift.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and dust.
  • Ability to work around moving equipment, heavy machinery, and industrial noise.

Work Environment

This position is primarily performed in an outdoor metals recycling and railcar component processing environment. Employees may be exposed to changing weather conditions, dust, dirt, vibration, noise, and moving industrial equipment. Strict adherence to all safety policies and procedures is required.
