PURPOSE/BASIC FUNCTION

 

To oversee production & maintenance of the Shredder while maintaining a high degree of safety.   This would include all aspects of daily production, maximize manpower performance and improve shredder maintenance to minimize downtime

 

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

 

  • Shredder Production, including daily coordination of shredder operations
  • Operate the Shredder during production shifts
  • Perform and document pre-shift start up inspections 
  • Repairs of breakdowns during a production shift
  • Documentation of production totals
  • Development and training of employees
  • Lead training of safety standards to union personnel
  • Insure all safety protocols are consistently followed
  • Collaborate with other supervisors to prioritize the needs of the facility
  • The employee may be assigned to special projects or required to perform other duties not listed above, which may vary from time to time as determined by management, to meet company needs

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS

 

Experience

 

Up to four years experience supervising employees in the similar scrap handling work or manufacturing operations desired.  Hands on experience with the operation and maintenance of shredders and material handling equipment (e.g. cranes, shears, bailers).

 

Education

 

High school or technical school diploma required.

 

Skills

 

Employee must demonstrate good people skills in supervising the work of union and non-union employees.  Must be able to communicate with and motivate the work force to assure the completion of mechanical and maintenance repairs as expeditiously and cost effectively as possible, to avoid work stoppages while maintaining safety.  Must be able to take over (on an emergency basis) responsibility of the plant manager, and the operation of equipment (e.g. pay loaders, cranes and mill operator) due to the lack of union manpower.  Should have good understanding of the operation of equipment and be able to determine problems and be able to make decisions to solve the problem.  Must be computer literate to design and input various reports.  Must have some knowledge of different types of scrap metal. 

 

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions

 

Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds as needed.  Walk and be outside 8-10 hours per day.  Ability to weld and cut with oxyfuel equipment is preferred.  Assist and Supervise other supervisors/foremen and union employees to install/fabricate/alter and repair mill components and NF Production components.
