Maintain and enhance receipts from existing suppliers and members of the public by managing the Facility’s
relationship with these suppliers.
Job Responsiblities

Oversee customer relations and retention at the facility, including but not limited to greeting customers,
analyzing scrap materials for purchase and authorizing overrides when appropriate. The Buyer may or
may not be the direct supervisor of one of more of these individuals, but regardless of the reporting
relationship, the Buyer will be responsibility for intervening as necessary to ensure that suppliers
experience an appropriate “customer experience” at SMM.

Assist all Commercial Managers with meeting supplier needs at the Facility, including but not limited to
quality inspections and payments.

Interacts with the operational personnel concerning the grading and quality of scrap delivered to the
plant. Exercises independent judgement in approving downgrades of materials in the yard.

Maintain full knowledge of processes and systems necessary to operate both ferrous and non-ferrous
scales when needed.

Field inbound commercial calls to the facility. Respond to quote calls received in less than 30 minutes,
or as soon as reasonably possible. Ensure another person meets this requirement when not available.
Cold call potential new suppliers and build a database to track successes of calls. Goal is to setup
appointments and establish new accounts.
- Establish new account relationships with potential suppliers to including visiting supplier locations to examine materials, quote prices and coordinating with the transportation department to establish rates and pick up schedules. Buyers will generally transition larger long-term accounts to a Commercial Manager once the relationships are established.
- Maintain content of facility scoreboards for customer content.
- Manage resolution of customer complaints and concerns.
- Monitor NMVTIS records to verify customers are properly reporting the detitling of cars.
- Plan & implement all marketing, outreach and customer retention programs.
- Conduct supplier surveys.
- Coordinate customer appreciation events.
- Leads the implementation of the “Scrap Acceptance Policy/Agreement” at the Facility.

Stay current on federal, state and local regulations regarding scrap metal recycling (e.g., scrap theft,
motor vehicle laws, etc…) and coordinate the implementation of these regulations at the facility.

Gathers appropriate information about the local market for raw material, particularly with regard to
pricing trends, local projects and other potential availability of supply.

Assists Commercial Managers in preparing responses to RFBs and RFPs where the materials will be
received at the Facility.
- Produces a weekly Facility Report on the buy performance for that week relative to targets.

Reports/Communicates with Supervisor activities and schedules to meet assigned objectives on a
weekly basis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); College degree in business or marketing desirable or equivalent business experience.

7 plus year’s experience in the scrap business or 5 years in a related field, preferably as a buyer, is
desirable. Position requires good “people” skills. Also requires considerable contact with steel scrap
dealers in person and by telephone to negotiate purchase of raw scrap and to assure timely deliveries.

perception and ability to adjust focus.
