Electrical Project Engineer

The role:

We're looking for a licensed Electrician who’s ready to take the next step into project engineering- or an experienced Electrical Project Engineer with strong trade foundations. 

In this role, you’ll apply your practical electrical knowledge to deliver capital projects across Australia and New Zealand. Using your hands-on experience and understanding of fixed plant environments, you’ll oversee new installations end-to-end, including investigation, budgeting, design input, drafting, equipment procurement, supervision of installation teams, and commissioning.

This is a great opportunity for an electrician who wants to move into a more senior, project-focused role while still staying close to the tools and grounded in real-world electrical work.

Responsibilities:

• Manage and contribute to engineering projects, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and commissioning of new plant and equipment.
• Review plant, equipment, and processes to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Produce detailed project schedules, assign tasks to contractors, and oversee installation activities.
• Ensure compliance with Australian and New Zealand electrical standards, safety regulations, and Sims Metal Critical Risks.
• Collaborate with commissioning teams and operations to ensure smooth handover of assets.
• Maintain project documentation, drawings, and manuals within Sims Metal systems.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, productivity, and material recovery.

About You:

• Qualified Electrician (unrestricted licence), or degree-qualified Electrical Engineer, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum 3 years of industrial site electrical experience, ideally with exposure to SCADA and PLC systems.
• Strong understanding of electrical design, installation, troubleshooting, and safety in fixed plant environments.
• Confident managing contractors, solving problems on the fly, and making informed decisions with minimal supervision.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder skills.
• Willing and able to travel across Australia and New Zealand when required.
