Your new role

 

We have an excellent opportunity for a motivated and experienced Lead Mechanic to join the WA Maintenance team, based in Kwinana Beach.

 

Reporting to the WA State Engineer, you will work closely with the Metro Transport Manager Operations and will be responsible for leading the effective management, maintenance and reliability of transport assets across Western Australia.

 

You will coordinate planned and corrective maintenance activities, support safe and compliant fleet operations, and work closely with operational teams, workshops, contractors and suppliers to maximise asset availability and minimise downtime.

 

 Your responsibilities will include:

 

  • Lead the day-to-day management, maintenance and reliability of transport assets across WA.
  • Coordinate scheduled servicing, inspections, preventive maintenance and repairs in line with manufacturer requirements and company standards.
  • Respond to breakdowns and equipment defects, prioritising work and coordinating internal and external resources to restore assets safely and efficiently.
  • Monitor fleet condition, availability and utilisation, identifying recurring issues and improvement opportunities.
  • Ensure transport assets, maintenance activities and records comply with relevant legislation, roadworthiness requirements, workplace health and safety obligations, and Sims policies and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate asset, service, inspection, repair, registration and compliance records within relevant systems.
  • Coordinate and provide day-to-day guidance to employees and contractors undertaking transport maintenance activities.
  • Manage relationships with workshops, service providers, parts suppliers and other contractors, including monitoring service quality, turnaround times and costs.
  • Support maintenance planning, budgeting, cost control, asset replacement and capital expenditure recommendations for the WA transport fleet.
  • Work collaboratively with Maintenance, Transport, Operations and EHS teams to support safe, reliable and efficient fleet performance.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure hazards, defects and incidents are reported and addressed promptly.

 

To be successful in this opportunity, you will have:

 

  • Relevant mechanical trade qualification or substantial experience maintaining and managing heavy transport assets in particular trailer assets.
  • Demonstrated experience in a lead transport, fleet maintenance or heavy vehicle maintenance role within an industrial, recycling, logistics, transport or mining environment.
  • Sound knowledge of heavy vehicles, trailers and associated transport equipment, including preventive maintenance and defect management.
  • Strong understanding of transport compliance, roadworthiness and workplace health and safety requirements.
  • Experience coordinating employees, contractors, workshops and service providers across multiple locations.
  • Strong planning, prioritisation and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond effectively to breakdowns and changing operational demands.
  • Good administrative and computer skills, including the ability to maintain accurate asset and maintenance records.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships across teams.
  • A current driver's licence; a heavy vehicle licence is desirable.
  • Flexibility to travel within WA and work additional hours when operationally required.
