Job description

Summary

The purpose of this document is to establish and define the functional role, reporting relationships, duties, responsibilities, and job requirements of a Project Engineer at Sims Metal Management. This is an Exempt position.

Reporting Relationships

The Project Engineer can report into a number of different positions, but will generally report to an Engineering Manager, a Project Manager, or an Operational Manager

Requirements

The Project Engineer should have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, applied mathematics, or similar practical experience. A minimum of 2-3 years working in an industrial manufacturing environment is a plus.

The candidate should have strong analytical and observational skills, with the ability to perform tasks with little or no direction. Strong math skills with an understanding of budgets, ROIs and business plans are required. Competency with the Microsoft Office suite, especially with MS Excel, is necessary. AutoCAD or similar drafting program abilities/experience is a plus.

Abilities to read engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, site surveys, flow diagrams, one-line diagrams, and general arrangements will be necessary as part of the day-to-day duties of this position.

A working understanding of the scrap recycling industry, and in particular metal shredders and downstream separation technologies is a definite plus to be considered for this position.

Walking, standing, climbing stairs/ladders, bending, squatting, crouching, and sitting will all be required at times. The employee should be able to lift up to 50lbs on a regular basis. Extended exposure to the outside environment should be expected throughout the course of the year.

The candidate should be able to communicate clearly in writing and verbally in English. Ability to communicate in other languages is a plus

The candidate must possess a valid and current driver’s license.

Essential Functions

The candidate is responsible for assisting with or completing all assigned projects and field jobs required by their direct supervisor. Assignments must be completed within set guidelines established by SMM Safety, Health, Environment, Community, and Sustainability (SHECS) standards, and any regulatory agency requirements as outlined by law. Field work includes supervision of contractors across a variety of trades (electricians, civil contractors, iron workers, plumbers, etc.).

The candidate’s primary function will be to manage and execute Capital Improvement (CIP) projects as assigned. Projects must be managed against business requirements so that project budgets and schedules fall within expectations. This candidate is expected to develop project plans, timelines, responsibilities, and required resources with the help of regional/local management. To execute the project, the Project Engineer will work closely with operations personnel to coordinate project activities with those of day-to-day production/operating requirements. The candidate should be prepared to solicit multiple bids from various contractors to shop for the best value to the company. The Project Engineer will be expected to generate and maintain a detailed project plan for each project under their supervision.

The Project Engineer will be required to supervise the project from planning to commissioning, and will be required to hand off the project to operational personnel with adequate operating and maintenance training. This candidate will be required to report on project status regularly. There may be times when the candidate will be required to manage R&D projects, setting up controlled experiments and documenting/reporting findings/results.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to ensure that projects are executed safely at all times. In coordination with local SHECS personnel, the Project Engineer will engage with contractors on a regular basis to ensure they are in compliance with all relevant SMM SHECS policies and procedures, that their work permits (i.e. hot work, confined space, etc.) are current and valid, and that all contractors are adequately oriented.
