Primary role to manage strategic projects taking place within the candidate’s business unit. Daily activities of this position include coordinating with vendors to estimate pricing for project execution, developing capital requests including financial modelling, coordinating engineering design efforts to achieve project objectives, managing contractors and internal labour during project construction phases, tracking & managing project budgets, handing off projects to operations personnel (including relevant training and certifications), tracking project performance post-completion, all while driving compliance with Sims and local jurisdictions’ environmental, health, and safety policies/regulations.

Primary Focus
Oversight of day-to-day strategic project planning, design, and execution 


Principal Accountabilities  

• Planning project activities based on business priorities 

• Working with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to generate designs to achieve project objectives 

• Generating capital requests based on available data (whether equipment optimization, new technology installation, efficiency improvements, product quality benefits, etc.) 

• Performing detailed financial analysis to justify capital cost of strategic projects 

• Soliciting quotations for major portions of project budgets 

• Planning project execution in detail 

• Coordinating installation contractors against the requirements of local production/operations activities 

• Supervising project execution (including monitoring civil/concrete, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical contractors) 

• Managing project risks (whether schedule, resources, budget, etc.)

 • Communicating project status regularly to stakeholders 

• Handing off completed project to local operations personnel (including any relevant training) 

• Tracking project performance against modelled benefits 

• Work with the Global Standards team to define and rate capabilities of newly installed equipment 

• Maintain and build trusted relationships within the regional operations, and centre of excellence teams to facilitate the development of an ongoing pipeline of work for the Asset Development team 

• Work with key equipment suppliers to evaluate new technologies and where appropriate build a business case to facilitate adoption within regional operations 

• Regularly liaise with asset optimization and continuous improvement teams in order to proactively identify problems and opportunities for future projects
• Demonstrate personal responsibility for, and promote culture of proactive compliance with, all Safety, Health, Environment, Community, and Sustainability (SHECS) policies, procedures, and initiatives within sub-region or regional maintenance function with multiple teams
• Promote culture of diversity and inclusion, positive employee relations, and teamwork, and ensure standards of fairness and equality are maintained within sub-region or regional function with multiple teams
• Set and approve budgets and manage costs in line with Company strategy, budgetary requirements, and financial policies and procedures for North America Metals
• Support and ensure compliance with all Company policies, procedures, and initiatives within North America Metals
• Devise workforce strategies to build capabilities, instil high performance, and promote career-development in line with succession-planning initiatives for North America Metals

Experience Required
 Degree in Engineering, Project Management, or related field
 3-5 years of experience, preferably in manufacturing, mining, energy, recycling/environmental waste, construction, demolition, or industrial consulting
 Operations / Supply Chain background, preferably in an industrial goods, mining or energy company
 Knowledge of Metals Industry
